The Flame Vine, locally known as Ottumulla, is a breathtaking tropical climber celebrated for its vibrant cascades of fiery orange blossoms. Blooming in dramatic clusters, this vigorous vine creates a striking visual display that brings warmth and colour to any landscape. Ideal for pergolas, fences, trellises, and garden walls, the Flame Vine grows rapidly, forming lush green foliage that transforms ordinary spaces into vivid natural backdrops.

Loved for its long flowering season and minimal maintenance needs, Ottumulla thrives in warm, sunny environments and is highly valued in ornamental gardening. Whether used to create shade, enhance vertical spaces, or add tropical beauty, the Flame Vine stands out as a stunning choice for gardeners and landscapers alike.

1. Light
Flame Vine thrives in full sun. It needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce its signature bright orange blooms. It can tolerate partial shade, but flowering will be reduced.
2. Temperature
Prefers warm, tropical to subtropical climates
Sensitive to frost—protect from cold winds and low temperatures
Ideal temperature: 20–32°C
3. Watering
Water regularly during the growing season to keep the soil moderately moist
Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings
Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot
Reduce watering in the rainy season or winter
4. Soil
Flame Vine grows best in:
Well-drained soil
Slightly acidic to neutral pH
Sandy loam or loamy soil enriched with organic matter
5. Fertilizer
Feed the plant:
Once a month during the growing season (spring–summer)
Use a balanced NPK fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) or a bloom-boosting fertilizer before flowering season
Avoid over-fertilizing, as too much nitrogen reduces blooms
6. Pruning
Prune after the flowering season to control shape and encourage new growth
Remove old, tangled, or weak stems
Heavy pruning helps maintain size and improves blooming next season
7. Support
As a climbing vine, it needs strong support such as:
Trellises
Fences
Pergolas
Garden walls
8. Pests & Diseases
Generally resistant but can be affected by:
Aphids
Mealybugs
Spider mitesTreat with neem oil or mild insecticidal soap if needed.
9. Blooming
Flowers mostly in late winter to early spring
Bright orange tubular blooms grow in large, showy clusters
Blooms best when exposed to strong sunlight and after light pruning
